Unlike film, video tapes were immediately visible, with the simplicity of usage that allowed it to win over quickly the amateurs. VHS tapes dominated the scene for many years, after winning the war against Betamax. The generations of video tapes that followed - primarily MiniDV & Hi8 - even with less clutter and better taping quality thanks to digital technology, had a shorter life. HD slowly but inexorably took over the market from video tapes. Video tapes can be reproduced with good quality readers and imported to digital with appropriate instruments. One of the primary drawbacks to magnetic tapes, and a leading cause of their decline, is their sensitivity to a number of environmental factors such as light, temperature, dust and magnetic fields. Video tapes were also subject to deterioration each time they were reproduced or overwritten and the chemicals in the film vanish more and more every day.
